I have been sick for a few weeks and found my energy lower than usual. I also found myself being a tad bit more negative than I usually am, likely a result of my low energy. After throwing out some anger to someone who deserved some but not all of my reaction, I had a chat with myself about energy management. It went something like this:
Is Someone’s Reaction my Problem?
Me: I think it is important to point out that each individual is responsible for managing their own energy. I can’t control how others perceive or react to my energy, so why should I bear the burden of their responses?
Other Me: While it’s true that individuals should take ownership of their energy, it’s important to consider the interconnected nature of human interactions. Our energy doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it impacts those around us, whether we intend it to or not.
Me: But what about self-protection? Isn’t it essential to set boundaries and prioritize our own well-being by not absorbing others’ negative energy?
Other Me: Absolutely, self-care is crucial. But there’s a difference between protecting ourselves and reacting with hostility or aggression. Self-protection is important, but it doesn’t have to come at the expense of compassion. We can set boundaries and distance ourselves from toxic energy while still approaching the situation with understanding and empathy.
It’s All About the Balance
Me: But does that mean I should constantly monitor and adjust my energy to accommodate others? Isn’t that exhausting and ultimately futile?
Other Me: Not necessarily. While we can’t control how others perceive our energy, we can strive to be mindful of our impact on those around us. This doesn’t mean sacrificing our authenticity but rather being aware of how our energy might be received.
Me: So, it’s about finding a balance between being true to myself and being considerate of others’ perceptions?
Other Me: Absolutely. It’s about cultivating authenticity while also practicing empathy and understanding. By taking responsibility for our own energy and being mindful of how it affects others, we can foster healthier and more harmonious relationships.
The Ability to Influence with Compassion
Me: But what if someone misinterprets my energy or reacts negatively despite my best intentions? Shouldn’t they bear the responsibility for their own perceptions and reactions?
Other Me: While it’s true that individuals should take ownership of their perceptions and reactions, it’s also important to recognize the power we have to influence those around us. Instead of placing blame, we can approach such situations with openness and curiosity, seeking to understand the root of the misunderstanding and working towards resolution.
Me: So, it’s not about absolving others of responsibility but approaching interactions with compassion and understanding?
Other Me: Yes. By acknowledging the complexity of human interactions and taking responsibility for our own energy, we can contribute to a more positive and harmonious world. It’s a collaborative effort, rooted in empathy and mutual respect.
It Takes Grace and Wisdom
Me: Sooooo….what are my takeaways from this conversation?
Other Me: I think you should answer that.
Me: To remember to embrace the duality of our responsibility: to manage our own energy with integrity and to approach the energies of others with compassion. By honoring this balance, we not only cultivate a deeper understanding of ourselves but also contribute to the collective elevation of consciousness. It is an intricate dance, requiring grace and wisdom.
Other Me: I think you got it!
