I overheard two people talking while in a doctor’s office this week. One of these persons was in great pain. Her companion said that she hoped this upcoming surgery would be the miracle she needed. The woman replied out of pain-driven despair that there weren’t any miracles anymore. My heart went out to her. I wanted to say so much to her, but it was inappropriate in the setting. Instead, I just said a prayer.
This encounter, brief as it was, became the seed for some reflection regarding miracles. I don’t think miracles are limited to the past or involve grand mystical experiences with seas parting or mystical pillars of light appearing before our eyes. I believe we are the pillars of light from which miracles can occur.
The Essence of Miracles
Miracles are not just extraordinary events that defy explanation but daily occurrences. They are the manifestations of love in its purest form. This is a concept beautifully encapsulated in the teachings of A Course in Miracles (ACIM). According to ACIM, “Miracles occur naturally as expressions of love. The real miracle is the love that inspires them. In this sense, everything that comes from love is a miracle.”
This profound statement invites us to view miracles not as rare, isolated phenomena. It tells us that miracles are constant opportunities to give and receive love. It’s a call to recognize the miraculous in the mundane, to see the divine in the ordinary, and to understand that every act of love, no matter how small, is a miracle in its own right.
Letting Our Better Angels Lead
Each day presents us with a choice: to act from a place of fear or to let our better angels guide us toward love. When we choose love, we align ourselves with the highest vibrations of the universe. And in doing so, we become beacons of light, attracting miracles not just into our own lives but also into the lives of those around us. Through these acts of kindness, compassion, and understanding, we heal ourselves and the planet. A choice based on love is as powerful as parting a sea.
Opening Ourselves to Miracles
To witness miracles, we must first be open to receiving them. This means cultivating a mindset of gratitude, remaining present, and embracing life with an open heart. It’s about seeing beyond the immediate pain and struggles. It is recognizing that even in moments of despair, there is hope and opportunities for growth.
I knew the despair the lady in the doctor’s office felt. I have experienced that lack of hope, longing for miracles. But I also have been blessed to experience many miracles, experiences born from love and realized through the kindness we extend to ourselves and others.
Whenever we allow our better angels to direct our next steps on the Highest Road, we open ourselves to the endless miracles that await. And with each step we take directed by love, we create a ripple effect- a string of miracles that can transform the world in subtle yet profound ways.
